Dr. Haitao Sun received his BEng degree, Master degree from Taiyuan University of Technology, China, in 2012, 2016, respectively, PhD degree from Ghent University, Belgium, in 2020, he was a postdoctoral researcher in Michigan State University from 2024 to 2026, and he is presently working as an Associate Professor in the College of Electrical and Power Engineering, Taiyuan University of Technology. His current research concerned with novel power electronic converter topologies and high-performance motor control; rare-earth-free motor design and multidimensional drive control; high-performance electric drive systems for electric vehicles; high-power-density motors and lightweight electric drive systems for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs); robotic joint and servo drive systems; SiC/GaN wide-bandgap power devices and high-frequency, high-efficiency power conversion; and high-reliability electric drive systems for special-purpose equipment operating in demanding environments, including mining and polar applications.
The research focuses primarily on advanced reluctance motors and their drive systems. Specific topics include the electromagnetic design of rare-earth-free machines, such as switched reluctance motors (SRMs), synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs), and induction motors (IMs); novel full-bridge, ring-winding, and tail/short-tail power converter topologies; zero-sequence current control and multidimensional current control; space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM); torque ripple suppression; and high-efficiency and low-noise control. Particular emphasis is placed on the coordinated design of the electric machine, power electronic converter, and control algorithms. The research further extends to the development and experimental validation of electric drive systems for electric vehicles, UAVs, robotics, industrial servo systems, and special-purpose equipment.
Prof. Sun has extensive international education and research experience. From 2016 to 2020, he pursued his Ph.D. degree at Ghent University, Belgium, where he collaborated with European research teams in the fields of electrical machines and power electronics. From 2024 to 2026, he conducted postdoctoral research at Michigan State University, USA, focusing on advanced motor drives, power electronics, and rare-earth-free electric drive technologies.
He currently maintains a long-term and active collaboration with the electrical machines research group at Newcastle University, UK. The two teams conduct joint research in advanced electrical machines, motor drives, and power electronics, and have co-authored several high-quality academic publications.
The research group is also actively engaged in international postgraduate education and joint training through collaborative programmes supported by the China Scholarship Council (CSC). Dedicated government-sponsored mobility pathways are available for partner institutions. Undergraduate and postgraduate students in the group may, depending on their research interests and study plans, apply to undertake joint training and academic exchanges at Newcastle University. Students may also pursue further opportunities to study for Master's or Ph.D. degrees at Newcastle University. These established international links provide students interested in global research experience and further study with a stable platform for overseas training, academic collaboration, and long-term professional development.
